Duration: Fixed term for 16 months
Salary: £30,949 - £33,242

The position is an EPSRC funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Senior Research Assistant based within Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The aim of this research project is to investigate machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for enhancing motion analysis/synthesis and/or geometry analysis/modelling. This would allow computer systems to recognize and synthesize object, scene and action. The research output can be applied in real world applications such as automatic video surveillance, 3D computer graphics design, character animation, automatic sport coaching, and human computer interaction. A PhD degree in a related discipline, or a PhD degree that is close to completion, is essential. You are also required to demonstrate strong computer programming skills.

The project will be supervised by Dr Hubert P. H. Shum, who is a Senior Lecturer and the Programme Leader of BSc (Hons) Computer Animation and Visual Effects. You may utilize the Motion Capture and Virtual Reality Laboratory managed by Dr Shum, which consists of more than £70,000 worth of equipment. During the project, you will have the opportunity to communicate with industrial partners in the related field. You can also work with Dr Shum’s PhD students and interactional research collaborators. There are occasions for overseas travel such as conference attendances.

An appointment will be made at either Research Fellow or Senior Research Assistant level (and thereby the respective salary level) dependent on the extent to which the desirable criteria in the Person Specification are satisfied. You will receive an automatic salary increment after 8 month of work within the contract. The project may be extended dependent on the availability of funding and mutual agreement.
